How to tell if your roof is suitable for solar

More and more people want solar roofs, but not all roofs are suitable for solar power. If you live in a gated community, its housing development association may have its own rules and regulations, including restrictions on roof aesthetics. Also, if your home can use an integrated solar roof, there may still be a limit to the number of panels you can allow on the roof. Similar restrictions may apply if you rent/rent (rather than own) your residence.

Without these limitations, here are other key factors that will determine the type of solar roof technology that is best for your roof.

roof type

The type and material of the roof directly affects the type of roof and solar technology you use. For example, solar panels are best suited for solid roofing materials (eg cement, asphalt) with a flat surface to generate solar energy efficiently. Otherwise, you might want to consider Tesla roof tiles or solar roof tiles.

Geographical and topographical location of the roof

The geographic location of your location and its local climate will determine the amount of sunlight you receive throughout the year. This, in turn, will directly impact the amount of solar roof panels you need to easily meet your monthly energy needs.
The design and elevation of the roof, along with the surrounding terrain, will affect the amount of shadow you receive during the day. For example, the right side of your roof may be near an empty street with tall trees, and thus get more shade than the rest of the roof. Therefore, a certified solar contractor can determine the best design for your solar roof. They can also increase the amount of sunlight received by changing the angle at which each solar panel is mounted on the roof.
Possibility of short-term roof replacement

Depending on the age and condition of your roof, it may be more economically feasible to install it alongside your solar roof if you anticipate replacing it in the short term (like 5 to 10 years). For example, high-quality solar roof tiles can last up to 40 years. So if you put off re-roofing after installing a solar roof, the panels may be damaged when the roof is actually re-roofed in the future.
Another possibility is to use solar rooftop PV technology - such as Tesla solar roof tiles - as your primary roofing material. This will further reduce the total cost (re-roof + solar roof installation).
